BOOK THIEF ESSAYS

 www.bookthiefessays2012.edublogs.org

After you have revised your thesis statement, the next step in the production of your 5-paragraph essay is to come up with three points that support your thesis. These three topic sentences will prove the idea or argument you have created in the thesis statement. The three topic sentences will, of course, be complete sentences and not bullet points. Here are a few examples based on the thesis statements that appeared in my earlier instructions:

THESIS: In Markus Zusak’s THE BOOK THIEF, a necessary and important ingredient in creating a true and authentic relationship is the “swapping of nightmares,” or the act of one person expressing his or her own personal story to another.

Point #1) Max and Liesel become closer after they tell each other of their fears and sorrows.

Point #2) When Frau Holtzpfel tells the story of her pain and longing, she changes from a spitting, angry neighbor to a friend of Liesel and the Hubermans.

Point #3) When Hans plays his accordion, he is, in effect, telling his story which leads to a closer bond with Liesel.

THESIS: In THE BOOK THIEF, author Markus Zusak writes of one character giving personal gifts to another; the nature of the gifts underscores both the literal and metaphorical state of his main characters.

Point #1) The gifts Liesel gives Max are discarded items; as a Jew in Nazi Germany, Max experiences the feelings of being a “discarded” human being.

Point #2) Liesel’s gift of the description of clouds provides Max with a glimpse of the outside world, a place where Max is no longer allowed.

Point #3) The gift of the feather connects to Max’s desire for flight, or freedom, from his captivity.

These topic sentences will be specific and narrowly focused, more like facts than broad opinions. They differ from your thesis statement in that they are points that connect to, support and prove the idea contained in your thesis.

Your revised thesis statement and your three supporting points should be posted on the blog by Monday, February 27th.

Also, you must give feedback to FIVE of your classmates’ work by Wednesday, February 29th.
