1ST BODY PARAGRAPH
Throughout the graphic novel, Jin faces bullying and when he
does so, author Yang draws the character surrounded by blackness (1). In the
section “Everyone Ruvs Chin-Kee,” Jin Wang, playing Danny, actively tries to
separate himself from Chin-Kee, his Chinese cousin, but is unsuccessful and
faces the ridicule of bullies. (2a) After some students pull their eyes and
taunt him with the words “Ah-So,” Danny walks through a school into a hallway
of blackness. (2b) (p. 121). (2c) Here,
Danny feels the shame of being different and that shame is connected to the
absence of color. (2d)
