For Friday, August 31st, 2012

You should be working on your speeches -- rewriting, adjusting, fine-tuning -- every night.

DUE FRIDAY, AUGUST 31st

FROM MARTHA -

On Friday, you'll be competing in the News Bowl for prizes (and grades). Questions will be drawn from the following areas:

National news
World news
Arts and Entertainment
Sports
Miscellaneous

The main focus will be on the presidential elections, especially the Republican National Convention.  Issues important in the election are:

Voting laws
Healthcare
Gay rights
Campaign financing
Jobs
Education
Economics
Tax laws
Entitlement programs (medicare, social security, food stamps, free and reduced school lunches, aid to dependent families)

Be sure to read at least three sources for your news between now and Friday.  Your assignment is to write 5 really good questions for the news bowl based on articles you've read and email them to me.  I need your questions by 8:15 Friday morning.  If I use one or more of your questions verbatim, you're team will be awarded points accordingly.

If I have to rewrite or change the question in any way, you won't get points.  If a member of your team submitted the question, your team won't be able to answer the question, but, hey, you get a point anyway.

Again, I would stress the importance of involving your parents in your effort to get abreast and stay abreast of the news.  Ask them for sources; ask them what's going on in the news; discuss current events at the dinner table and during carpool.  This will help you win!!!!

Good luck.

DUE TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4th

Ask your parent or parents the following question: What is the difference between belief and faith?

Type up their responses and bring it to class on Tuesday (or email it to me by Tuesday morning start of school).
