In Gene Luen Yang’s American Born Chinese, the author uses darkness to suggest the characters’ sadness. (1) Throughout the narrative, Yang uses a multitude of colors to suggest teen-age life but often he depicts characters who are in pain amidst a black background. (2) Jin Wang, a Chinese-American, struggles with his ethnicity in a predominantly white school. Before he can learn to be comfortable with his true self, he ignores others of Asian heritage and does everything he can to assimilate completely into white culture. (3) Several times during the narrative, he is depicted as walking or existing in darkness, including a moment when he is rejected by a white girl, when he is ridiculed by bullies and when he is rejects his best friend who is also of Asian descent. (4)
